This is a day of awareness.
Maybe this is a little more awareness than many of us in recovery live in daily. There has been a massive amount of loss in this world due to overdose. Families are broken, children are lost, parents are lost, brothers, sisters…… it just seems to go on. I can remember a time when my Facebook feed wasn’t filled with RIP posts. I remember the times when I didn’t get the “ did you hear about _____” phone calls or even worse, making those same phone calls to others.
Today is the day of overdose awareness.
This is a day to remember those we have lost to this battle of addiction. To be able to let others know how we miss you after they’re gone. The fact is almost everyone has had to experience this. If you haven’t then you are blessed. Overdose in America has reached beyond epidemic proportions. Every day it’s like a 300 passenger jumbo jet crashes.
Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 67,367 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2018. This is more individuals lost than the entire Vietnam war, each year.
So, what will you remember on Black Balloon day?
Take time to reflect on those who you were blessed to meet.
Take time to remember you’re still here if you are struggling and there is help available.
